This session will explore the interconnectivity of certain types of temporary immigration visas and labor trafficking in the United States. While the exploitation of the immigrant workforce is a hotly discussed issue, the fact that immigrants who are brutally exploited often enter the United States legally on specific visas, and the way these visas are exploited, is often overlooked. The connection between these visas, the employer and the employee often make it near impossible for the victim to escape from the employer’s sphere of influence, and such individuals are often completely unaware of the laws that are in place to protect them in the United States. Attendees will learn about the most “exploitable” visas, the specific conditions that exploited immigrants often find themselves in and the types of benefits and assistance that can be offered to them. This session will discuss the Trafficking Visa, or “T-Visa”, and policy suggestions that would encourage more individuals to come forward to report abusive and exploitative employers.
