The Urban Justice Center Mental Health Project, sponsored by Trinity Church Wall Street, will launch our report on the systems failures that have led to the mass incarceration of people with mental health challenges and our recommendations for diverting them from New York City jails.
A panel will discuss findings from the report, which details the history of how we arrived at the current state of excessive incarceration of people with mental health concerns. The report highlights the particular challenges of Black, Indigenous and People of Color and other disenfranchised groups. In addition, the report is the first to provide recommendations specifically proposed by those directly impacted by the criminal legal and mental health systems, those who directly serve the population, and other stakeholders.
