Author: Karandikar, Sharvari & Frost, Caren
Abstract: This qualitative study compared perceptions of gender-based violence among female sex workers and male intimate partners of female sex workers in the Kamathipura red-light area of Mumbai, India. In-depth interviews with 13 female sex workers and 10 Intimate partners of female sex workers revealed differences in perceptions of violence and sex work. While female sex workers reported severe violence from male members of the community, particularly their Intimate partners, male members perceived their use of violence against their partners as a household issue. Male perceptions Indicated patriarchal beliefs demonstrated by the need to control their female partners, and violence was used as a tool to exercise power over female bodies and behaviours. The study addresses a major gap in the literature on gender-based violence among sex workers of Kamathipura and makes recommendations for future practice, policy and research.
