Human Trafficking in the Urgent Care Setting: Recognizing and Referring Vulnerable Patients
Author: Panda, Preeti
Abstract: Recognizing human trafficking in healthcare settings can be challenging and requires an index of suspicion. It is important for urgent care providers to understand the nature of human trafficking and presenting signs. Recognizing red flags for human trafficking, creating a safe space for patients, and providing resources can make a significant impact on trafficked individuals, regardless of their definite disclosure of exploitation. To best serve patients experiencing human trafficking, urgent care providers and staff should take steps to familiarize themselves with local resources and policies for confidential electronic medical record documentation.
