Why is understanding cultural differences important when working with victims of trafficking? According to the 2021 Trafficking in Persons Report issued by the United States Department of State, identified foreign national trafficking victims in the United States include those found in all sectors of human trafficking. In addition, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime document on Human Trafficking Indicators provides a detailed list of characteristics of trafficking in circumstances we may ordinarily not think of, such as domestic servitude, begging and petty crime. Many of these victims do not recognize themselves as being trafficked. Victims who have experienced the trauma of being trafficked suffer deeply. Cultural differences can make communicating with law enforcement, justice department, and victim services professionals more difficult. Differences between high context and low context cultures affect how people communicate and think, and how they react to those in positions of authority. Cultural differences also affect how people react to stimuli and their orientation to time and space. This session will provide a trans-cultural orientation for helping professionals and others working with victims of trafficking.
